Preparing and Submitting Your Submission

In this category, innovative technology demos, novel forms of interaction, and also interactive artistic works can be submitted. The demo contributions will be presented in a separate demo session and are intended to encourage people to get to know each other, try them out, get inspired by them, discuss them, and generally exchange knowledge. Presenters create audience attention for their demo in a preceding demo slam.

Contribution Types 

• Interactive systems. These can be novel hardware solutions, interaction concepts, or interesting software solutions from various application areas. The only condition is that they must be non-commercial contributions. We also welcome the submission of demonstrators accompanying a long paper submitted to the scientific program.
• Design Artifacts. Innovative examples of digital media or interactive systems and interactive, multimedia, or artistic works (e.g., art installations, games).

The Submission

The submission has to constrain the following components:

• A brief description of the system or the design/artistic work in a compact form. The submissions can be up to 4 pages long (excluding references)
• Demo video (optional, but highly recommended) max. 5 minutes, Full-HD or 4k, mp4 format, max. 150MB
• Preview image for the overview page (Resolution: 1920 x 1080 px; Format: jpg)
• Submissions are not anonymous and should include all author names and affiliations
• Demo Technical Supplement (optional)

Formatting

Submissions should be prepared using the  LaTeX and Word templates from ACM. The correct template for submission is the single-column Word Submission Template or single-column LaTeX using \documentclass[manuscript,review]{acmart}.

Supplementary Materials

Videos can be of any length and should include closed captions as well as audio descriptions, see Accessible Presentation Guide. Other supplementary material may include, for example, survey text, experimental protocols, source code, and data, all of which can help others replicate your work. Any non-video supplementary material should be submitted as a single .zip file, including a README file with a description of the materials. Reviewers should be able to access the contribution of the paper solely based on the main PDF submission. That is, the paper submission must stand independently without the supplementary material.

Submission

Submissions are facilitated via the ConfTool. Authors may submit and edit their materials until the submission deadline. Should you encounter any difficulties, or technical problems or have any questions about this process, please contact the Paper Chairs via demos@mensch-und-computer.de. 

Accessibility 

Authors are expected to follow SIGCHI’s Guide to an Accessible Submission. If you have questions or concerns about creating accessible submissions, please contact the DEI & Accessibility Chairs via accessibility@mensch-und-computer.de early in the writing process (the closer to the deadline, the less time the team will have to respond to individual requests). Papers flagged as inaccessible by a reviewer will have to be reassigned. Note that while we strive to match the best reviewer to each paper – the best reviewers for the work may not be able to review an inaccessible submission.

Inclusivity

Submissions should be prepared with an active consideration towards the respectful use of language, particularly towards marginalised groups, particularly around gender and disability.

Research Involving Human Participants

As a researcher, you have an overriding obligation to protect participants’ welfare and safety and to ensure they are treated fairly and with respect. We recommended the following document by the European Commission on „Ethics in Social Science and Humanities“ for a wider and deeper understanding of the underlying basic ethical principles and “Research Ethics in Ethnography/Anthropology.” These include doing good (beneficence), avoiding doing harm (non-malificence), and protecting the autonomy, well-being, safety, and dignity of all research participants. Moreover, all researchers involving participants must meet appropriate ethical and legal standards as outlined in the following document: ACM Publications Policy on Research Involving Human Participants and Subjects.

Use of Generative Tools

All authors should be aware of the ACM Policy on Authorship, which articulates the authorised use of generative AI in submitted works. Text generated from a large-scale language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT must be clearly marked where such tools are used for purposes beyond editing the author’s text. All authors are responsible for the content created by these tools, the use of the tools must be disclosed (e.g., in the acknowledgements), and the tool cannot be listed as an author. As such, authors are responsible for plagiarism, misrepresentation, fabrication, or falsification of content and/or references generated through the use of generative AI tools, and could be sanctioned with penalties, such as a publication ban. We will investigate submissions brought to our attention and will reject papers where LLM use is not clearly marked.

Selection Process

The submissions are reviewed and may include work that was invited or selected from other submissions. The selection process includes reviews by the co-chairs and Demo Jury. Note that due to the short turn-around time, you will not receive formal feedback on your submission other than the acceptance decision. Our intention is to ensure that the Demo track is exciting while representing a range of projects being undertaken across diverse MuC communities. The selection will also take into account feasibility, available space at the conference, and other relevant information.

Upon Acceptance

The corresponding author of a conditionally accepted submission has to follow the instructions on preparing and submitting a final version by the Publication-Ready Deadline. If the authors cannot meet these requirements by the Publication-Ready Deadline, the venue chairs will be notified and may be required to remove your contribution from the program. Presentation at the Conference

For each accepted submission, at least one author must register for the conference and present their work synchronously in-person. Presentations should follow the ACM SIGACCESS recommendations for accessible presentations. Authors are allowed to present in English and German; however, we recommend having English slides.

After the Conference

Accepted Demonstrations will be distributed in the Mensch und Computer Conference Proceedings available in the GI library, where they will remain accessible to thousands of researchers and practitioners worldwide. Video presentations of accepted demos will be archived in the GI library and YouTube.
